How many lessons will I need?

The figures provided on the Gov.uk website, state that on average, a new driver will require about 40 hours of driving tuition, to pass the test. In reality, some people require less than 40 hours and others need more than that. A broader range of between 20 to 60 hours would be more realistic.
Various factors influence the number of lessons required, including age, gender and country of origin. Experienced cyclists or moped riders have already acquired an understanding of road rules, which will give them an advantage. Furthermore, if you combine driving practice at home with professional tuition, fewer lessons will be required.

A weekly one-hour driving lesson works reasonably well for the majority of learner drivers. However, increasing lesson frequency will reduce the time between lessons and subsequently speed up the learning process.

An ideal number of lessons would be two hours, two or three times per week. This would be more cost effective, as it would require 25% fewer lessons overall. If there was irregularity in the course of lessons, this would increase the total number of lessons required.
Some people believe that a one-week, ‘40 hour’ intensive course would be effective. However, this demanding method can be counter-productive, due to fatigue and declining concentration levels.

Should I learn in an automatic or manual?

Learning in an automatic car does not necessarily mean fewer driving lessons. In a manual car, the clutch and gears are only a small part of the whole driving process. As you learn to drive, you will master all the required skills simultaneously. In other words, by the time you can steer, you will be able to change gear.
In a manual car, it is rare for someone to fail a driving test due to ‘use of gears’ or from ‘moving away under control’.

In an automatic car, it is certainly possible for someone to fail a driving test because of improper ‘use of gears’. One new driver did recently fail for this reason. He selected the ‘2’ position, instead of ‘D’ for ‘drive’ and continued this ‘hold’ on 2nd gear throughout the test.

Some people, who pass their test in an automatic car, later decide to take a driving test in a manual one, because of the inconvenience of having a restricted licence. This would typically cost them an extra £500, for 20 driving lessons. For both practical and financial reasons, it makes more sense to learn in a manual car, from the start.
